Send daily questions in Slack

Connect Slack so your team answers the daily question in one tap, right in a Slack DM.

What you'll do

Connect your Slack workspace, then choose for each person whether they get the daily question by email, as a Slack DM, or both. In Slack they tap one button to answer. No browser, no login, no account. Slack works on every plan, including Free.

Before you start

  • Connecting Slack needs the Admin role in Daily Question. After that, Admins and campaign Managers can add people and set delivery. See Admin, Manager, Member, who can do what.
  • You need at least one campaign.
  • Some Slack workspaces only let Slack admins install apps. If yours does, Slack asks a Slack admin to approve the request first.

Connect Slack

  1. Go to Settings, then Integrations.
  2. Click Connect Slack.
  3. Pick your workspace and click Allow.

You land on your campaign, ready to add people.

Add people from Slack

  1. Open a campaign and find the Members panel.
  2. Click Add from Slack. You see everyone in your Slack workspace who isn't on the campaign yet.
  3. Check the people you want, or use Select all, then click Add selected.

They're added without an invite email and get questions as Slack DMs. Admins and Managers are skipped, since only Members receive questions.

People added from Slack don't get email until they verify their email address by creating a Daily Question account (signing in with Slack counts). Until then, Slack is their only option.

Choose Email, Slack or Both

Each person in the Members panel has a Delivery setting:

  • Email: the question arrives by email.
  • Slack: the question arrives as a Slack DM.
  • Both: it arrives both ways. They answer once; whichever they use first counts, and the other says they already answered.

To change many people at once, check them (or Select all), pick an option next to Set delivery for selected, and click Apply.

Slack and Both are only available for people whose email matches someone in your Slack workspace. The setting belongs to the person, so it applies in every campaign they're in. For people who come in through a group, set it on the group's page.

What your team sees

Each morning, each person gets a DM with the question and one button per answer. After they tap, the message changes to "You answered X. Thanks." An Add a comment button opens a short, anonymous comment box if they want to say more.

The afternoon reminder

One reminder DM goes out in the afternoon, only to people set to Slack who haven't answered yet. People set to Both don't get it, since they may have answered by email. We never store who answered. The reminder list shrinks as people answer and is wiped every day.

Post weekly results to a channel

Each campaign can post to its own channel. On the campaign page, under Details, pick a public channel next to Slack results and click Save campaign. Every Monday we post last week's Health Score and category scores there. Only totals are posted, never who answered what. Choose Don't post to Slack to stop.

Disconnect Slack

Go to Settings, then Integrations, and click Disconnect. People go back to getting questions by email, except people added from Slack, who wait until they verify their email. Removing the Daily Question app from your workspace in Slack does the same thing. Either way, we delete the connection. If you connect again later, everyone's Email, Slack or Both choice comes back.

Common questions

  • Are Slack answers anonymous? Yes, exactly like email. We store the choice and the date. Nothing else. See How to answer the daily question.
  • Can I see who answered in Slack? No. Nobody can, including us.
  • What can the app access? It sends DMs, lists people and public channels so you can add people and pick a results channel, and reads messages people send directly to the app so it can reply. It doesn't read your channels or other conversations.
  • Does Slack cost extra? No. It's included on every plan, including Free. Your plan's seat limit still applies.
  • Can someone switch back to email? Yes. Set their Delivery to Email on the campaign's Members panel. People added from Slack need to verify their email first.
